On January 22, 1498, Columbus landed on St. Vincent. Britain and France laid claim to the island in the 17th and 18th Centuries. In 1783, the Treaty of Versailles ceded the island to Britain. In 1969 Associated State Status was granted and on October 27, 1979 independence was attained. The entire economy of the island is dependent on agriculture and tourism. @
